Hello. Welcome. This website has so far felt like a launching pad to me: a place to collect information, help theatre artists and educators do what they love to do, and set all of that out into the world. This week, I finally felt the need to add a blog. I have a lot on my plate, so deciding to blog means I really, really want to talk about some things, because they are important to me. To the artform that I love. To the people who make theatre because they love it, too, and they have something to say. So, my goal for this blog is two-fold:
- Talking about theatre to those who love it like I do. This could be tips and techniques to help artists and educators, shows I love and why I love them, shows I’ve seen and what I thought, books and authors I’ve read, directors and actors whose work I love (or maybe not love), and so on. Basically, the goal is to talk about theatre to theatre people, and
- Talking about larger issues that affect society as a whole, and relate those to theatrical practice. This could also include occasionally talking about theatre itself in a more critical, theoretical manner. What is theatre? Why do it? Is it being silenced? Regulated? How is it different from other closely related artforms? What role does it play in a functioning society? How can it help the world have difficult discussions? Such topics, and many more, are important conversations.
In other words, I’m going to voice my opinions, whether anyone agrees with me or not. I’m passionate about theatre; I have been since I was eight years old. It matters to me. And since I also want to be a positive force in this world, that means I need to challenge ideas or trends that come and go, especially if they impact some of the things that I care so much about, like theatre. I don’t know if this will be weekly or monthly or just whenever I have the time and desire to write. But for now, I will make the time, because I want to serve my theatrical community, and I feel strongly about the issues surrounding art, free speech, individual creativity, authentic performance, etc. These are things that I feel are in some degree of jeopardy and must be protected. Stay tuned for more. It will come. Soon. And thank you for spending a few minutes with me. All the best, Barbra
